Small Flowering Trees

Pink Flowering Dogwood

(Cornus florida rosea) grows to a height of 15 to 25 feet. Pink flowers appear in April before the leaves. Songbirds love the small red fruit, which appears in fall. The leaves turn burgundy red in fall. One 3 foot tree available, $20.00.

Kousa Dogwood

(Cornus kousa) is a small, flowering tree that typically grows 15 to 30 feet tall. White flowers appear in late spring with the leaves. Dangling red one-inch berry-like fruits appear in early fall. Cornelian-cherry Dogwood

(Cornus mas) grows to a height of 15 to 25 feet with a spread of 15 to 20 feet. Yellow flowers appear in late March before the leaves appear. Fruits are cherry red. One 5 to 6 foot tree available, $30.00. One 5 to 6 foot tree with one inch caliper available, $35.00.

Eastern Redbuds

(Cercis Canadensis) are small, native, flowering trees that produce beautiful pea-like blooms along their stems in April, prior to the emergence of leaves. Redbuds range in size from a height of 12 to 20 feet, with a spread of 15 to 30 feet; with the exception ‘Merlot’, all of the trees listed below have yellow leaves in fall.

‘APPALACHIAN RED’ is known for its fuchsia pink to red flowers. Three 6 to 7 foot trees available, $30.00 each.
‘MERLOT’ has purple leaf color, magenta flowers, and shinier, thicker leaves than many other redbuds. Three 6 to 7 foot trees available, $35.00 each.

Seven Sons Flower Tree

(Heptacodium micronoides), grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet with a spread of 10 feet. It produces clusters of seven creamy white flowers in September, followed by a showy display of purplish-red fruits, and has handsome shredding tan bark. The flowers attract hummingbirds and are a good source of nectar for butterflies in the fall. Three 6 to 7 foot trees available, $30.00 each.

Okame Cherry

(Prunus x ‘Okame’) produces beautiful pink flowers in late March for three weeks. It has orange/yellow/red leaves in the fall. This tree grows 15 to 20 feet tall with a spread of up to 20 feet wide. Has showy reddish-brown bark. Ten 6 to 7 foot trees available, $35.00 each.

Siebold Viburnum

(Viburnum sieboldii) can be used as a large shrub or as a tree when the lower branches are removed. It grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet, with a spread of 15 to 20 feet. White flowers cover the tree in May. Birds devour the fruit, which emerges pink, turns red, and eventually becomes black. Foliage is deer resistant. One 8 foot tree available, $30.00.

Crapemyrtle

(Lagerstroemia indica) Miscellaneous varieties available. Typically grow 10 to 15 feet tall. Showy flowers of various colors depending on the cultivar, starting in mid-July and continuing into September. Many have attractive tan or reddish brown peeling bark. Some varieties have colorful fall foliage. Three 5 to 6 foot trees available, $25.00 each.

Whitebarked Himalayan Birch

(Betula utilis var. jacquemontii), fast growing, it matures to a height of 25 to 35 feet with an 18 to 25 foot spread. This tree has the whitest bark of any birch. Two 6 to 7 foot trees available, $30.00 each.

Goldenrain Tree

(Koelreuteria paniculata) grows 30 to 40 feet tall and wide. Leaves emerge pinkish bronze in spring, mature to bright green in summer, and turn yellow in fall. Bright yellow flowers in 12 to 15 inch open clusters appear in early July. They become brown, papery seed capsules which resemble Chinese lanterns. One 4 to 5 foot tree available, $20.00. Tall (Shade) Trees

River Birch

(Betula nigra), a native tree, is known for its beautiful cinnamon sheets of papery exfoliating bark that remain attached to the trunk. It is notable for its ability to tolerate wet soil, air pollution, and heat, and is one of the most disease-free birches. A fast grower, it grows from between 3 to 10 feet per year when young. Over a long period of time, it will grow 40 to 70 feet tall with a 40 to 50 foot spread. One single stem tree, 7 to 8 foot tall is available, $30.00. Three single stem trees, 6 to 7 foot tall are available, $25.00 each.

Katsura Tree

(Cercidiphllum japonicum), heart-shaped foliage turns brilliant yellow in the fall and smells like cotton candy. A handsome tree, it grows up to 70 feet tall with a 50 foot spread. One 5 to 6 foot tree available, $25.00. One 6 to 7 foot tree available, $30.00.

Ginkgo Seedling

(Ginkgo biloba) is the only surviving member of a group of ancient plants believed to have inhabited the earth up to 150 million years ago. Its fan-shaped leaves turn bright yellow in fall. It grows 50 to 80 feet tall after many years. Female trees, when pollinated by a male ginkgo, will produce fruit. One 7 foot tree with one foot caliper available, $35.00.

Willow Oak

(Quercus phellos) is shaped like a pin oak without drooping lower branches. It has narrow, willow-like leaves, and grows from between 40 and 75 feet tall with a 25 to 50 foot spread. Fall foliage color is brown. The name “chestnut oak” refers to chestnut-like bark on mature trees, and is drought-tolerant, thriving in rocky soils. One 6 foot tree available, $30.00.

Lacebark Elm

(Ulmus parviflora) has exfoliating bark with a mixture of light gray, green, orange, and brown colors that produce a mottled effect on some of these trees. Its leaves are much smaller than those of the American elm, giving a lacy effect to its canopy. It grows to a height of 40 to 60 feet with a spread of 30 to 40 feet. Lacebark Elm is tolerant of urban conditions and has no serious insect or disease problems. Two 7 to 8 foot trees available, $45.00 each.

Japanese Zelkova

(Zelkova serrata) grows to a mature height of 50 to 80 feet with a spread of 50 to 75 feet. Leaves turn reddish in the fall; its vase-shaped branching pattern makes it useful to replace the classic American elm. It tolerates urban conditions and is disease resistant. Two 10 to 12 foot trees available, $45.00 each.
