Michael Drummond, President of Drummond Scientific Company, received the Tree Commission’s Tree Stewardship Award in March 2009 for replacing a dead tree located in front of his business at 500 East Parkway in Broomall with a Willow Oak (Quercus phellos). At the time of its planting, the Willow Oak stood 17’ high, and spread 10’.   Its trunk caliper was 7”.

Willow Oak is a native tree, so named because its leaves look like those of a Willow Tree. It grows to a mature height of about 30’. The fruit is an acorn, which the tree begins producing at about 15 years of age, earlier than many oak species. Willow Oaks grow up to 2’ per year. The leaves turn bright yellow in the fall.
